Engineering Experiment: Virtual Reality Drone Piloting

Do you need a circuit board in your drone to be able to control it?

The Project

Summary

In one of my first college courses concerning system dynamics, controls theory, and feedback, my professor made a bold claim that I took upon myself to investigate:

Without control theory and system dynamics, we would not be able to do things like fly a drone
— A Professor

The Task

To evaluate the claim that technology enables us to fly a drone (and not just fine motor control of your muscles), I created a simulation in virtual reality with multiple control systems in order to evaluate the challenge statement. This project primarily uses C# coding and Blender, Solidworks, Unity, and the HTC Vive VR Headset.

In Part Two, I was tasked with evaluating the shortcomings that went unaddressed in Part One, including further analysis of the theory behind claims made in the first video.

The Results

Initially, I claimed a stalemate after the part one video. Then, I addressed multiple shortcomings in part two of the video.
